Trip Itinerary

5 days Congo Nile Trail Hiking,  The Congo Nile Trail is well marked with several stopovers of villages that offer camping sites, shops, and guesthouses for those who prefer this. The trail primarily follows rocky, dirt roads that wind up and around the numerous hills between Gisenyi and Kamembe.

Within trail never expect a pleasant rural single truck, you will be sharing the road with motorcycle traffic and the occasional beer delivery trucks, and there are a few long climbs, you will be ascending and descending between intervals of 1450 and 1800 meters.

Throughout the entire trail Food and water are available

Our  hiking and cycling guide
will lead you for 18
km this day, and we recommends that he/she finds you
at your accommodation at 8am.

is only one accommodation option to choose from:
the Cyimbiri Guesthouse.

Day 2

Another day and 14 km in our guide's cheerful
company.

have breakfast at Mama Nelly's place
There’s a great reason you aren’t taking your
breakfast from Cyimbiri: enjoy 30 walking minutes further a
remarkable lady lives and works. Mama Nelly’s place
is the one organised and highly recommended
eating stop on the Trail. She is a perfect example of
how your activity brings economic development to
the rural areas of Lake Kivu — she has shown great
cooking talent and has been additionally trained by
the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).
For other meals on the way you will have to grab
snacks from village shops that are available
everywhere, just basic in their selections.

Spends a night at kinunu guest house

Kinunu Guesthouse will be your accommodation in
the middle of the northern Congo Nile Trail section.

colourful.)

serious day: 27 km!

The base camp at Bumba is simpler than at Kinunu
and about the same level as Cyimbiri. The price on
the right includes breakfast. For dinner you can
order from their menu; items cost up to USD 10.
If you feel like some more comfort, there’s also
Ibigabiro Hotel nearby, previously called Dian Fossey
Hotel. It is nothing special (and its design can be
odd at times) but definitely in a different category
than Bumba. The price for a twin room, B&B, would
be USD 60 and more

Day 4

Your last Hiking day with guide 16 km to Karongi/Kibuye.
At the end of the hike there is going to be a short
engine boat trip scheduled for you …

Day 5 Tuesday,

One of the most well-known and frequently visited islands on Lake Kivu is Napoleon Island. Outside of Karongi is Napoleon Island. The island in Lake Kivu may not be the biggest, but it is one of the tallest. Just over 100 meters separate the peak from the water's edge, providing tourists with a breathtaking view of the lake, islands, and shoreline in the area.
